Syllabus Scenario C

Scenario C. Two parents are planning to live abroad with their two children in one-year time, and they are looking for an English Tutor who can help their son and daughter of 10 and 12 years old to have a smoother transition to a math class. These two children have gone to a bilingual school for 2 years, but for some reason the math teacher talked more in Spanish than in English during his class, and for this reason the children were not familiarized with enough English vocabulary on science topics. Their parents want their children to learn and master science vocabulary used for 6th and 8 th grade. The children are pretty good at learning English, but do not understand the specific vocabulary quite well.

Course Description:

This course is developed exclusively for the teaching and learning of school children, so that they can reinforce the specific English vocabulary skills in the science subject matter they use in grades 6th and 8th grade.

The course answers several questions:

- Why is the language needed? In this case, because the children need to learn and study with this language.

- How will the language be used? The teacher will take into account the four English language skills, but always focusing on science vocabulary. 

- What will the content areas be? They are the sciences. 

- Who will the learner use the language with? The children would use it with their science teacher at the moment, but when they are older, they will use it with their partners. 

- Where will the language be used? The children will use it with the science teacher and with their classmates. 

- When will the language be used? When it is science class and they need to use it.


Course Objective:

The objective is for both students to be able to understand the vocabulary they are being taught and thus achieve fluency with people from different countries, improving their communication skills and abilities in English.


Specific Objectives:

  • To teach the two students in an easy, didactic and fun way the different vocabulary of the science subject that is to reinforce them to the maximum and thus get a good knowledge of the vocabulary in English to be able to travel with their parents.
  • To always maintain a good relationship with both students, being a nice, fun and trustworthy person in which they can tell what they feel and think about teaching. Always look for different learning methodologies.

Part First (3 Months) January to March

Read and answer In this activity, students will choose two different science-based reading books, and depending on what they are reading, they will be asked questions according to each book. This will reinforce their English level in terms of reading skills.

Listening Comprehension In this activity students will access the following Youtube video link, https://youtu.be/uh4dTLJ9q9o listen to a song and practice listening skills.After finishing the video, students will say in English what the video is about and what it talks about.
Speaking Comprehension The students will have on a sheet of paper a small conversation in which four planets earth are described, they must choose a planet earth that they like, another planet earth that they do not like each one and also four animals are described and they must choose which animal they like more and why, which animal they do not like and why each one will have a different animal and planet, they will not have both the same one.
Part Third (3 Months) July to September

Writing Comprehension Students will each have to write a short summary of why they love planet earth, what they like about it, how they care for the planet and how they would help people start caring for it. Then between the two of them they will also make a little song that talks about the care of nature, they can be guided by the song of "Frailejon".
Listening Comprehension In the following video,https://youtu.be/K-bYFAFeH_Q students will hear different parts of the body being named. The video will be played so that they can listen to it as many times as necessary and take note of the parts of the body that are being talked about.
Part Fourth (3 Months) October to December

Speaking and Writing Comprehension In this activity students have to take on two very complicated challenges which are writing and speaking. In a very orderly and organized way they are going to create a play about caring for animals and nature, it should last at least 20 minutes and should have a short reflection. After they have written the play, they will present it in front of the whole school to show their progress with the language.
Learning Strategies The first strategy is based on technological tools, different interactive platforms are used in which the students' answers can be verified when answering and confirm whether they are learning or are missing something. The practice makes the student analyze, repeat and if it is necessary to do it several times it is done since it is not easy to understand things the first time. As for memorization, this type of learning strategy for the student the main thing is to retain the information so that he/she does not forget it.
